Norman Gary Finkelstein (born December 8, 1953) is an American political scientist and activist whose research centers on the politics of the Holocaust and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Born in New York City to Jewish Holocaust–survivor parents, he rose to prominence with his 2000 book The Holocaust Industry, in which he argues that Holocaust memory can be exploited for political ends.
Finkelstein earned his BA at Binghamton University and his MA and PhD in political science from Princeton University. He has held faculty posts at Brooklyn College, Rutgers, Hunter College, New York University and DePaul University. His more recent work includes Gaza: An Inquest into Its Martyrdom (2018), and he remains a vocal critic of Israeli policy and an advocate for academic freedom.
