A bad habit, a worse routine?
There’s a strange habit I’ve noticed in myself, and I suspect I’m not alone in it. Scattered throughout this blog you’ll find YouTube videos — mostly interviews — featuring people whose views I disagree with, sometimes strongly. These aren’t voices I stumbled upon by accident. I seek them out, click play, and keep watching, even as I feel a rising sense of frustration, irritation, or outright hate toward what’s being said.
What makes this worth writing about isn’t the disagreement itself — disagreement is normal, even healthy. What’s strange is the compulsion to keep listening despite already knowing exactly where I stand, and despite the discomfort it brings. I’m not tuning in to be persuaded. I already know their position, and I know mine won’t change. So why keep watching?
Is this curiosity? Is it a form of self-inflicted outrage, the digital equivalent of picking at a wound? Or is it something more useful — a way of stress-testing my own beliefs, staying informed about opposing views, or simply understanding the emotional pull that keeps so many of us glued to content that makes us angry?
This post is my attempt to sit with that question honestly, using my own viewing habits as the case study.
