Howard Lutnick (born July 14, 1961, Long Island, NY) is a billionaire financier and the 41st U.S. Secretary of Commerce. He grew up on Long Island and lost both parents to cancer before finishing college — a hardship that shaped his drive. After earning an economics degree from Haverford College in 1983, he joined Cantor Fitzgerald and rose to become its chairman and CEO by 1996.
Lutnick narrowly survived the September 11 attacks because he had taken his five-year-old son to his first day of kindergarten. The attacks killed 658 of Cantor Fitzgerald’s 960 New York-based employees, including Lutnick’s brother Gary and his best friend. In the aftermath, he launched the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, which ultimately distributed more than $180 million to the victims’ families. He went on to rebuild Cantor into a global financial powerhouse, expanding it into electronic trading, real estate brokerage (through Newmark), and cryptocurrency.
As co-chair of Trump’s 2024 transition team, he helped shape the incoming administration and fill the Cabinet. As Commerce Secretary — confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 — he became one of the main proponents of Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy. His tenure has been marked by both influence and controversy, including conflict-of-interest concerns tied to his business interests and questions about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2025.
