No me acuerdo exactamente en qué año sucedió pero seguro que antes del 2008.
Yo había conseguido un trabajo grande de “desmonte de tierra,” donde había que cortar y quemar muchos árboles, (la mayoría Pinos) y arbustos, (manzanita).
En estos casos contrataba mejicanos para que me ayudaran y en general era un grupo de 4-5 personas a las cuales conocía desde hacía tiempo.
Ese dia llegaron 4, “El Orejon” y tres más. Uno de ellos era desconocido. Alto y flaco. Muy callado y muy trabajador y aparentemente no hablaba ni español ni inglés. Podría haber sido mejicano. Ellos lo llamaban “El Turco.”
Comenzamos alrededor de las 7 de la mañana porque había mucho que quemar y había pronóstico de lluvia para el próximo día. La lluvia hace mucho más difícil poder quemar árboles y ramas verdes; entonces al comenzar les dije que se “cargaran las baterías” porque sería bueno terminar al final del dia.
No paramos ni un minuto hasta las 12:30. “El Turco,” del cual no recuerdo su nombre, trabajó muy pero muy duro. Sin parar; sin tomar agua y sin hablar. Era un “tipo raro.”
Yo les dije a los trabajadores que iba a comprar un sándwich y que tambien compraria cerveza que iba a ser consumida siempre y cuando termináramos el trabajo, (alrededor de las 5 de la tarde) y todos, excepto “El Turco,” rieron.
Cuando estaba saliendo de la propiedad con mi camioneta lo veo sentado en un tronco, aparte del grupo de Mejicanos, sin agua ni comida y le pregunté si no habia traido algo. Me dijo que no moviendo la cabeza y lo invite a entrar.
Fuimos al famoso “Oregon House Store.”
Durante el camino de pocos minutos le hice algunas preguntas pero claramente no quería hablar mucho. Llame a mi mujer por teléfono y hable en español y me di cuenta de que él entendió ya que luego me preguntó: “su esposa”?
Llegamos al lugar, que es un pequeño mercado con un restaurante con pocas mesas. Le pregunté si estaba bien un sándwich grande, (en ingles) y me dijo que si. Yo compre una cerveza y le traje una para él y dijo, “No. Agua.” En inglés. “Coca”? – Agua.
Pedí la comida a la chica que atendía y nos sentamos afuera. Tomo casi un litro de agua casi sin parar y se relajo un poco. Le pregunté su nombre y me sonó raro. Le pregunté si era Turco y me dijo que no, de Palestina. Teníamos mucho hambre pero el lugar estaba lleno y los sándwiches no llegaban. Entonces pedí “papas fritas” que estaban listas y comenzamos a comer y a hablar en inglés. El hablaba con un acento medio raro, que yo no podía identificar; pero muy bien.
Aquellos que me conocen saben que yo no paro de hablar así es que empecé a preguntarle cosas de su vida y a contarle la mía. Estaba interesado en saber cómo “El Turco” había llegado a la ciudad de Marysville, la cual es muy pequeña en el norte de California.
Esto es más o menos lo que recuerdo que contó que me impacto muchisimo. Honestamente no sabía bien donde estaba Palestina pero durante la conversación entendí que vecino a Israel.
Un dia, sus padres y hermana de 14 años iban de camino a Israel para comprar mercadería. Tenían que cruzar una cerca de alambre y un puesto de guardia o vigilancia.
Pocos metros antes de llegar al puesto, niños y adolescentes empezaron a tirar piedras a los guardias. Muchas piedras! Dos soldados armados fueron a su encuentro amenazandolos de muerte pero ellos corrieron y desaparecieron rápidamente.
Los padres y hermana fueron detenidos y les comenzaron a preguntar quienes eran esos chicos. Ellos no sabían nada y no reconocían a nadie. Como eran los únicos adultos, los detuvieron para llevarlos y ser interrogados. Dos soldados se llevaron a sus padres a otro lugar y dos se quedaron con su hermana en esa “casita” de control. Comenzaron a tocarla. A humillarla, a reírse de ella y cuando los otros regresaron, estos dos la violaron mientras los primeros cuidaban que nadie pudiera verlos. Cuando los segundos iban a violarla, llego un vehiculo con mas soldados y la dejaron ir casi sin ropas.
Yo en este momento del relato ya no podia comer mas.
Su hermana era virgen y el piensa que quedó embarazada porque a los 3 meses del evento; ella se suicidó.
No solo eso, sus hermanos mayores habían sido detenidos hacía tiempo y nadie sabía si estaban vivos.
Sus padres nunca regresaron.
La suerte “El Turco” fue que después de un tiempo él consiguió que un empresario Hindú lo llevara a Egipto para cargar y descargar camiones. Grandes bolsas con diferentes contenidos. Ellos se hicieron muy amigos y este Hindú le ofreció la posibilidad que que fuera a California donde tenía familia.
Así es como se cruzo en mi vida pero nunca más lo vi y tampoco los mexicanos. A veces me pregunto “donde estara”? Estará vivo? Habra regresado a su pais?
Esta historia fue muy chocante para mi y empecé a saber más sobre Palestina a través del Internet donde leí otras historias atroscinantes similares y peores conectadas con la ocupación.
