The Definition of War

[Please check also: “War and Politics – One Thing.”]

“War is a state of organized, often prolonged conflict in which groups (such as nations, coalitions, or factions) utilize violence as a strategic tool to achieve specific, often political or economic, objectives.”

Introduction by Perplexity AI

Wars and violence have been enduring elements of human history, shaping societies and altering the course of nations. As we progress into 2025, the world finds itself grappling with an alarming escalation in armed conflicts and political violence. From the devastating humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the toll of these conflicts is staggering, with millions displaced, thousands killed, and entire regions destabilized.

The past year alone has seen a 25% surge in global political violence, marking a two-fold increase in conflicts over the last five years. The Middle East remains one of the most affected regions, while other areas like Africa’s Sahel and Great Lakes regions, Myanmar, and parts of Latin America also face deepening unrest. These crises are not only a testament to unresolved political tensions but also highlight issues like resource scarcity, ideological divides, and power struggles that fuel violence.

In this blog post, we will explore the state of wars and violence in 2025—examining their causes, consequences, and the paths forward amidst a world increasingly marred by conflict.
