  • There’s no clear “winner” — most military analysts describe the war as a grinding war of attrition rather than a conflict either side is decisively winning. Here’s the current picture as of late August 2026:

    Territory Russia continues to hold roughly the same broad share of Ukrainian territory it’s held for a while (around a fifth, including Crimea and parts of Donbas), and is still gaining ground, but slowly.     Strikes and missiles Russia launched a record number of missiles against Ukraine in July 2026, notably firing more missiles per month than it’s currently producing, and has increasingly leaned on S-400 and Zirkon missiles to make up for shortfalls in its ballistic missile stockpile, exploiting Ukraine’s shortage of Patriot interceptors with large strikes on cities including Kyiv.

    Ongoing fighting As of August 22, 2026, Ukrainian attacks were reported killing people inside Russia and Russian-occupied territory, while Russian attacks continued killing people in Ukraine — the war remains active on both sides.

    Bottom line Neither side is close to a decisive military victory. Russia is grinding forward at a very slow pace at high cost, while Ukraine continues to strike back into Russian territory and defend its lines. Different sources (Ukraine’s DeepState vs. the Institute for the Study of War) even disagree on the exact territorial trend in a given month, which shows how contested and hard to pin down “who’s winning” really is right now.
